British social realism wins big in new Ken Loach film Sun. Apr. 9 at 1, 4, & 7pm and Mon. Apr. 10 at 7pm, Avalon Cinema “I, Daniel Blake won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year, and it is indeed one of Loach’s finest explorations of social realism.” –Mirror Nanaimo – TheatreOne’s Fringe Flicks presents I, Daniel Blake, a powerful new film from British master Ken Loach. This poignant snapshot of life in modern Britain screens at the Avalon Cinema on Sunday, Apr. 9 at 1, 4, & 7pm and Monday, Apr. 10 at 7pm. Tickets are $13. Ken Loach won his second Palme d’Or at Cannes for this timely drama about an aged, ailing handyman’s battle to survive after being denied his government health allowance. His story is one of a desperate struggle against the state. With his benefits coverage put at risk unless he looks for employment, Daniel struggles with how to obey his doctor’s order to stop working. Waiting to sign on at the local Jobcentre, Daniel befriends Katie, a young single mother who is also being shoved around by the system, and relocated with her two kids from a London homeless shelter to a council flat up north. These two unlikely friends form a mutually beneficial alliance and makeshift extended family. Loach and his frequent collaborator, screenwriter Paul Laverty, spin a tale that will leave no one unmoved. The director effortlessly builds empathy for two downtrodden people, honest would-be workers who are navigating a cruel tangle of red tape while trying to steal a happy moment. Fringe Flicks is generously sponsored by Cutting Room Creative, Wingren Floors, Michael Gill Wealth Management, and Red Door Yoga. Fringe Flicks screenings are held on Sundays at 1, 4 & 7pm, and Mondays at 7pm at the Avalon Cinema, in Woodgrove Centre. Tickets are $13.
