VIU’s Theatre Department presents “Oedipus Rex,” Malaspina Theatre, 900 Fifth St, Nanaimo, 250-740-6192

Thursday, March 7 to Saturday, March 9, 2019 @ 7:30 pm
Wednesday, March 13 to Saturday, March 16, 2019 @ 7:30 pm

A raging teen is attacked by a presidential motorcade at a crossroads … if he fought the guards and left them for dead, is he guilty of murder? Should he be exiled, imprisoned, or executed by the state?

One plague-ridden day in Thebes, a famous hero promises to save the city by punishing a violent offender. Unfortunately, king Oedipus’ pride gets in the way of the cold-case investigation…and he uncovers an ugly truth about the killer.

Director Eliza Gardiner’s adaptation of the prize-winning play by Sophocles is an 80-minute show that features cross-casting, dynamic staging and fast-paced dialogue.

Come consider how criminological factors like abandonment and adoption relate to murder, incest, suicide, and self-mutilation. Come ask yourself: what is more important, vengeance or justice? What is more powerful … free will, or fate?

Tickets $15/$12 students
