Water Stewardship Symposium, Nanaimo
April 11 – 12, 2018 @ 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
>We know water. If you live on this coast you know water – rain, river, sea, rain, snow, rain. Did I mention rain? And while we all may have a weak moment in mid-February, shake our fists at the sky and cry out to the seemingly constant downpour, we love it too. On this coast, where the mountains meet the sky and receive rain and snow, which form our streams and rivers as the water travels to the sea, we swim, we paddle, we wade, we fish, we drink, we water, we watch and celebrate the bounty of this place.
On April 11th and 12th we will have an opportunity to share water stewardship success stories, learn of innovative initiatives valuing healthy functioning watersheds as important natural assets in our communities and find ways to grow our water stewardship network.
The Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate symposium will begin on April 11th with a field trip to Buttertubs Marsh and the 5-Acre Farm in Harewood. The Marsh and the Farm support many environmental and social values not the least of which is ground water recharge and storm water management. That evening join Bob Sandford, author and EPCOR Chair for Water & Climate Security at the United Nations University, as he presents The Hard Work of Hope an inspirational talk on effective solutions in the face of climate change. The April 11th events are free but, as space is limited, preference will be given to those attending the symposium.
On April 12th, the symposium will look at the recent history of water stewardship, designing our communities around healthy watersheds, local programs to expand stewardship of surface and ground water, valuing ecological services as communities, working toward a culture of stewardship and identifying actions items identified throughout the course of the day. The centrepiece of the day will be a panel discussion of community empowerment and partnerships. Featuring community stewardship groups such as NALT and local Streamkeepers, City and Regional government, the panel will explore the successes of water stewardship partnerships and will discuss concerns raised during audience participation.
The cost to attend the April 12th event is only $45 prior to March 9th and $55 after that date. This includes a lunch and other refreshments.
The field trips will begin at 2:45 pm, the keynote address by Bob Sandford starts at 7 pm at the Coast Bastion Hotel. The Symposium runs from 8:30 am to 4 pm also at the Coast Bastion Hotel. Pre-registration is required for both days’ activities. Register at https://www.civicinfo.bc.ca/event/2018/Nanaimo-Water-Symposium.
