Hell isn’t hot, I decided as I stepped off the Pacific Coastal plane onto the tarmac at Nanaimo Airport. It’s wet and cold.
Just a few hours ago, I had been sitting in the cockpit of our friends’ sailboat, cruising the Caribbean. In the past two weeks, I had splashed with manatees, rays, nurse sharks, dolphins and dozens of sea creatures that I had yet to identify. I had floated over pristine coral reefs, enchanted by the purples, reds, and vibrant greens of this fragile world, and I had found a rhythm with the waves and the wind.
But TAKE 5’s call is not one to be ignored. And here I am, at press time, like you, waiting for the burst of spring’s warm breath.
In this special “green” edition, TAKE 5 with Y.E.S. is celebrating our first Green Citizen. Also in these pages, we discover rebates on rainwater catchment and share some sage stories and advice in keeping our beautiful planet. As we move closer to Earth Day, on Tuesday April 22, 2025, please do your part, big or small; it all counts, and if you can help, join the Ladysmith Sportsmen’s Club annual Watershed & Area Cleanup on April 26. These volunteers who give their time for our planet are true heroes.
I took a final look at my Caribbean world. A heavy moon hung over the dark azure sea. I turned away. After all, Vancouver Island is surrounded by the ocean, and water binds us all.
Happy Earth Day! -Marina Sacht and the TAKE 5 greenies
