The sound was deafening. I could hear it from my house – that deep throaty RIBBIT. At first, I ignored it, but it grew louder – more consuming as weeks went by. Who or what was making that sound that reverberated across the field into my peaceful slumber?
I called my trusty canine, who would lay down his bone to protect me. The pond on the back of my property had, over time, grown shallower and grassier and wilder. As I listened, I could make out a chorus of male voices, some deep and authoritative, some higher and hopeful. The pond had become the home of the American Bullfrog, and the call was the males’ attracting females, ready to increase their numbers and drive out the competition. American Bullfrogs are an invasive species, and Dr Tim Goater shares their story with our readers in this issue.
A warm welcome to editorial intern Gabrielle Lee, who joins the TAKE 5 team and makes her inaugural contribution with the Bullfrog and Tree tips to keep you safe and your trees happy. And Kerith Waddington finds out what makes Cedar stronger.
Our cover story this month is on a remarkable restoration of a Deuce coupe and a pickup truck by local car enthusiast Fred Bell. Francesca Pacchiano writes about it along with the upcoming Rod Run on August 15 and the Ladysmith Show N Shine on Aug 16. Fred plans to attend both, so you’ll get a chance to see his wheels up close.
There is so much more happening — Ladysmith Celebration Days, Arts on the Avenue, Petunia & the Vipers concert in Cedar, and the Cowichan Craft Beer and Food Festival in Chemainus. A big shout-out to all the volunteers who put on these events. It’s truly an Awesome August.
