August 2023

I think August may be my favourite month. There are still lots of summer days left to enjoy while the whole community is active with events, outdoor festivals, concerts, and visitors admiring our piece of paradise.
This year certainly did not disappoint with not only the number but also the quality of the events. The sleepy back-water vibe that I met when I moved here in 1990 is long gone. It’s been a real pleasure to see our communities blossom thanks to the efforts of the kind-hearted selfless volunteers who manage these events.
Open your calendar as you flip through this month’s issue. You will find it in overdrive. Check out Rob Johnson’s profile of a local race car driver who is almost in his 90’s and still rides his motorbike. Or check out our story on the popular “Cruisin” event.
August is also a time for the beach. And we highlight some of the critters you might see in our local waters. You can discover more at the Ladysmith Community Marina‘s Sea Life Celebration. This is a fun family event that will spark curiosity and wonder in all ages.
Water is on most people’s minds as our Water Restrictions intensify. But nowhere more than in our rural communities that rely on their well water and the Cassidy Aquifer. In the August issue, we begin a special two-part series on the aquifers’ dilemma.
