March 2025

But what a strange time we are living in. Earthquakes, tariffs, universities censoring students, and a mayoral by-election that resulted in the Town of Ladysmith “distancing” itself from social media comments made by one of its own Councillors. As you’re reading this, Ladysmith may already have a new mayor. And one thing that all the candidates had in common was their call for transparency. We hope that the new mayor will remember that pledge. Because for far too many years, a code of silence has come over the Town of Ladysmith. The days of Mayor’s ‘Open Door’ are a distant memory. And where once you had helpful staff, questions are now fielded by Communications/Engagement Specialists.
Kerith Waddington reminds us that we do have a voice when it comes to US tariffs. It’s the sound of money and how you spend it, and Nikki Toxopeus writes “Don’t be tarrified”. Instead, focus on building local food security. And like Dr. Michael MacKenzie suggests we may be leaning towards a more unified Canada.
There’s always an opportunity to make something positive in what we choose. See you in the spring.
